In trying to help find solutions for our current health care problems, I chose to interview an office manager who works for a local
physician office. One of the first questions I asked was, if she could change
anything about health insurance what it would be. Sherian replied,
“Instead of making the premiums the same for everyone, it would be a smart idea
to regulate the costs according to what a person or families needs are.” Another
suggestion was to have physicians include a certain amount of patients whom they would take care of without charging any money for short periods of time. This would
consist of people who don’t qualify for Medicaid but can’t afford to pay for
their own insurance coverage.
Many people over the past several years have had to switch
insurance companies every year because of high premiums. A few years ago
Humana offered great rates to patients here in St.
George. After serving the community for several years they decided that because of the high percentage of claims being paid out on cancer and cardiac patients, they could no longer serve the southern Utah area. Humana told
the patients they would no longer be covered. All of these people had to find other health
insurance and a lot of them have been denied coverage because of their health
problems, and have become uninsurable.
Sherian also suggested the need for more honesty among
insurance companies. It would be a good idea for someone or a group to force
insurance companies to abide by the laws. There are a lot of people who go
without any insurance coverage because they cannot afford
the high premiums. People should not be denied health care insurance because
they are sick nor should they be denied because of high premiums that they cannot
afford. Finding an appropriate plan, including all people, would be ideal for our Nations health care problems.
